Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois to team up with Rides Mass Transit District for April 24 welcoming home ceremony

Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois and Rides Mass Transit District have teamed up to provide park-and-ride services to and from several locations to Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois for the April 24 welcoming home event in Marion. RMTD buses will depart the parking locations listed below throughout the event approximately every 15 minutes beginning at 5 p.m.

Wheelchair Banner Deadline for Flight 3
Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois has announced April 10, 2018 will be the last day for Wheelchair Banner purchases to be on Flight 3. Flight 3 is currently scheduled for April 24, 2018 and will transport over 65 veterans to Washington DC. Flight 3 Important Dates
The following dates are subject to change: February 16, 2018 - Application Deadline (Veterans & Guardians) March 24, 2018 - Guardian Training April 7, 2018 - Veteran Medical Evaluation April 24, 2018 - Flight Day  

Flight Slotting & Guardians:

Veterans will be slotted on Flight 3 on February 20, 2018 and we will begin notifying veterans on that date via mail. Veterans without a chosen guardian will be assigned a guardian after they have confirmed they can fly. Guardians selected will be notified prior to training on March 24. Guardian Training is free, but requires a ticket. Tickets will be available online at a later date to ensure adequate space for the guardians attending. VHF Announces 3rd Flight Honoring Area Veterans
Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois celebrated its Inaugural Flight on April 25, 2017, honoring 55 veterans with a trip to Washington DC. With a goal of flying once per year, Veterans Honor Flight immediately began preparations for a second flight. Due to overwhelming support from the Southern Illinois community, Flight 2 was funded early and flew on October 17, 2017, using a larger aircraft, 68 veterans were flown. Parking Locations for Flight 2 Welcome Home
Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois and Rides Mass Transit District have teamed up to provide transportation to and from several parking locations to Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois for the October 17 Honor Flight Welcome Home event. “Due to the overwhelming response from the public in welcoming our Veterans home after the Inaugural Flight this past April, we will offer public parking at four off-site parking locations,” stated Nancy Brown, Vice-Chairman of Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois. “We have secured off-site parking at Rent One Ballpark, Cornerstone Church & Sam’s Club, Community of Faith Church and John A Logan College with transportation service through Rides Mass Transit District.” Buses will depart the parking locations approximately e [...Read more]
Flight 2 Important Dates

Guardian training

2 September 2017 10 AM Veterans Airport All guardians who have not previously attended Guardian Training with Veterans Honor Flight are required to attend. Any guardians who have already received training are also welcome and encouraged to attend. Guardians who have not completed training will not be permitted to accompany veterans on Flight 2.

96.5 Cents Per Dollar Go Directly to Veterans
Following the successful completion of the Inaugural Flight in April 2017, Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois has completed an internal financial review and is pleased to announce that of monies expended, 96.5 cents of every dollar was in direct benefit of a veteran. Brian Questelle, Chairman of the Board, said, "I was impressed by the low overhead of just 3.5 cents per dollar, which covers our printing, insurance, and other costs. This was accomplished because no one involved with Veterans Honor Flight receives any compensation for their personal expenditures." Flight 2 Set for October 17
Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois is proud to announce Flight 2 has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 17, 2017. After just a few months, generous donations have made it possible to schedule a second flight in 2017. A larger, A320 aircraft will be used for Flight 2, expanding availability to 65 veterans. Flight 2 Announcement Date Set
Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois will announce the next Honor Flight date on Wednesday, June 14 (Flag Day) at 10am in the terminal building at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois, located on Route 13 west in Marion. “Due to the overwhelming response and support for the Inaugural Flight this past April, the Executive Board has decided to schedule a second trip in 2017, rather than waiting until 2018” stated Nancy Brown, Vice-Chairman of Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois. “We have secured the aircraft and will be able to send 65 veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice.” “I am extremely excited about the support we have received thus far” stated Bryan Questelle, Chairman of Veterans Honor Flight o [...Read more]
